PROJECT DESCRIPTION: |
Idaho National Energy and Engineering Laboratory in
collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is
developing a high-temperature polymer membrane that will exhibit permselectivity an order of magnitude higher than current
polymer membranes. The project focuses on the separation of CO2/CH4 and
CO2/N2 gas pairs representing industrially and environmentally important
separations. Capitalizing on the interplay between polymer structure and gas
diffusion at temperatures between 100 to 400 degrees celcius
will lead to structures with high stability and selectivity. By increasing
the rigidity of the thermally stable polybenzimidazole
(PBI) and backbone using semi-interpenetrating polymer networks, the R&D
will inhibit interchain mobility and control
diffusion pathways. This approach will lead to polymer membranes with tunable
permeability, polymer modification, and casting protocols. |
