PROJECT DESCRIPTION: |
The primary goal of this project is to develop the necessary
atomic-level understanding of serpentine carbonation reaction processes to
enhance carbonation reaction rates and reduce process costs. A second task is
to perform a scoping study of the geographic proximity of large carbon
dioxide emission sources, appropriate mineral deposits, and plausible
transportation corridors. The major project focus is direct in situ
observation of key fluid-carbonation reaction processes using the advanced
capabilities of the X-ray synchrotron research facility at the Advanced
Photon Source (APS). These studies are directed by studies performed at ASU
to identify key materials and processes for in situ reaction observation.
Model serpentine materials are investigated and compared to serpentine
materials with known impurity (e.g., Fe) levels. These studies will provide
the basis to begin to develop a serpentine-carbonation reactivity matrix to
predict and enhance the carbonation reactivity of serpentine feedstock
materials as a function of their source characteristics. Select olivine
(e.g., forsterite) materialswill
be studied for comparison, due to their formation during serpentine heat
activation and potential as a carbonation feedstock material. A scoping study
will be done to make a preliminary evaluation of the availability, mineability, and proximity to existing and likely carbon
dioxide sources, and suitability of transportation corridors for carbon
dioxide transport to mineral sequestration sites. |
